14 April 2009 - München, Germany
After the longest day and hike in the history of the world, I had another day to poke around München. With my feet aching, I walked around the city, enjoying a last bit of Germany before heading to Austria.
This is the München Rathaus, in the center of the city in Marienplatz. It has an elaborate Glockenspiel, that is much more complex and exciting than the clock in Prague-- this one has dancing men, knights that joust, and much more. Still, despite the sizable crowds that religiously gather everytime the clock goes off, one expects more.
The city of Verona gave the city of München a statue of Juliet, inscribed with a line from Shakespeare's play.
The Spielzugmuseum (Toy Museum) was located in the Altes Rathaus, right by the statue of Juliet. Obviously, I had to go-- especially since they had an exhibition entitled 'Barbie: 50 Years'
In the famed Englischer Garten in the city, surfers were practicing in the river that cuts through the wilderness, riding the waves as buses and tourists passed by. Only in Europe.
The English Garden was in stark contrast to the manicured gardens of Würzburg, and I loved the way the paths and bridges were (apparently) haphazardly placed, as if to let the passerbys discover the place for themselves.
