11 April 2009 - Würzburg, Germany

Day 2 of our Reise (trip). We traveled to Würzburg in Bavaria, a town surrounded by hills (which are covered in grapevines and vineyards) and cut in two by a roaring river. One of the bridges leading over the river is an imitation of (or, perhaps merely inspired by) the famous Charles Bridge in Prague.

We immediately decided to visit the fortress slash castle at the top of the hill. It was a solid hike, pretty intense. This is a view of a Kirche (church) on a neighboring hill.

A view of part of the castle. The little red speck at the top of the balcony is me.

Würzburg, from the Marienberg Fortress. The green in the foreground is the hill that leads up to the castle, which is completely covered in grapevines.

A detail shot of a Dom (cathedral) on the other side of the river. Apparently, the cathedral (which is covered in death motifs and the like) can be seen from the Residenz, the place of residence of the Prince Bishop, who, when he looked out his window, could be reminded of the life's mortality.
