10 April 2009 - Bamberg, Germany

The beginning of our break-- we took a train from Berlin to Bamberg, in Bavaria.

Bamberg is a charming town, but we stepped off the train into weather that was ridiculously warm and humid. We then decided to walk around the city with all of our bags.

I think a little bit (well, perhaps a lot) of what we saw was lost on us, as we lugged our bags around. But once we finally dropped them off, it was a little easier to notice some of the unusual buildings and structures. This is the old Rathaus (city center or town hall). It seemed to be located on a bridge over a river, which struck me as a little strange. But the paintings on the outside of the building were gorgeous!

On a top of a hill, there was this garden slash labyrinth. It was surrounded by these strange knobby trees, a big terrace of sorts overlooking the city. Apparently, later in the spring slash summer, everywhere there is dirt in this photo is covered in roses, of all varieties and kinds.

Bamberg had a lot of sculptures and out-of-the-way oddities. It was fun to find them-- high above the street, underneath bridges, tucked behind trees.

Our hostel was a little removed from the city, located on this river and surrounded by a gorgeous park. In the morning, the park was filled with early joggers and runners, and the scenery was fantastic.
